7. New method investigates submicrometer particles

Using a hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer and
an optical particle counter, Heintzenberg et al. ["The connection
between hygroscopic and optical particle properties in the
atmospheric aerosol"] draw a direct experimental connection
between hygroscopic and optical particle properties for
atmospheric particles of 300 nanometers size in urban aerosol. The
particles were analyzed continuously over the period 22 December
2000 to 4 January 2001 near Leipzig, Germany. The authors find
that the non-hygroscopic particles scatter less light and have a
broader range of scattered light than the hygroscopic particles. The
most hydrophobic particles show a high number fraction (20 to
30 percent) that is classified as "transparent spheres," a term that
encompasses anything from glassy spheres to high molecular
hydrophobic organic droplets.
