INFM research to improve the service of cell phone systems

New superconductor devices for cell phone systems improve the efficiency of receiving cellular phone calls. This is the important result derived from the research project “Superconductor filters for telecommunication”, carried out at the INFM, the National Institute for Physics of Matter, Italy.

The project is co-ordinated by Professor Ruggero Vaglio (INFM Research Unit in Naples), began in 1997 within the “Progetto Sud” - South Project - INFM a research project promoted by INFM to support the development of southern Italy (for further information on “Progetto Sud”, please see attached handout). This program was carried out by the Research Unit of Naples and by INFM Units in Catania and Salerno, as well as by CRIS research centre of Ansaldo (one of the leading industrial groups in Italy). The South Project involved 20 researchers, out of which 10 are young graduates. The funding is about 1.5 million Euro.

The study was carried out in collaboration with OMNITEL Pronto Italia, one of the cell phone network providers in Italy, and has resulted in the prototype of a new type of superconductor filters for GSM technology. The filters are devices which will be attached to the base of the ground antennas, and will increase their capacity of receiving signals. This also means an improvement of quality of the received signal, and therefore a lower number of interruptions during phone calls.

Tests of this kind have been successful in the United States and in Japan. The INFM study is the first in its field in Italy, and one of the few in Europe. It uses superconductor materials at critical temperature in the field of telecommunication, instead of conductors such as gold and copper which are commonly used.

This research has been chosen as a successful example by the European Union. Today, negotiations are underway in order to launch a new project aimed at the realisation of superconductor filters for UMTS.
