I. Highlights

3. Spectral features of stimulated electromagnetic emissions

Frolov et al. ["Spectral features of stimulated electromagnetic
emissions, measured in the 4.3 - 9.5 MHz pump wave frequency
range"] analyze the steady state spectrum of electromagnetic
emissions (stimulated by an electromagnetic pump wave)
transmitted into the ionosphere from the Sura facility in Russia
and focus on the dependence of the entire emission spectrum on
the gyro harmonic number in a wide frequency range (4.3 to 9.5
megahertz [MHz]). Based on their experimental data, the authors
find that gyroeffects exert a strong impact on the emission features
in all frequency ranges between neighboring gyroharmonics. This
impact is stronger for smaller harmonic mode numbers.

6. Sea surface temperatures influence on North Atlantic/European
winter climate

Cassou and Terray ["Dual influence of Atlantic and Pacific SST
anomalies on the North Atlantic/Europe winter climate"]
investigate the association between principal modes of
atmospheric variability in the North Atlantic/Europe (NAE) region
and global sea surface temperatures (SSTs), and use cluster
analysis to analyze both observational and general circulation
model (GCM) data. In NCEP Reanalysis data, they find that two
patterns of upper-air zonal wind anomalies in winter, resembling
positive and negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation
[NAO], are associated with a "tripole" SST anomaly pattern over
the North Atlantic; a positive NAO-like pattern accompanies La
Nina-like SST anomalies in the equatorial Pacific. In an
atmospheric GCM experiment with observed global SSTs, the
authors identify two NAO-like patterns that accompany SST
anomalies with opposite signs over the tropical Atlantic and
Pacific SST. They argue that the relationship between NAE winter
climate and El Ni'±o-Southern Oscillation is nonlinear, only
manifesting itself during La Ni'±a episodes.
