Online and offline relationships: the more things change the more they stay the same

Relationships carried out over the Internet are not so different from offline relationships. This is the finding of new research presented today, Thursday 19 July, at The British Psychological Society Social Section Annual Conference, held at the University of Surrey, Guildford, by Dr Monica Whitty, of the School of Applied Social and Human Sciences, University of Western Sydney.

Men and women involved in Internet relationships have been found to behave in ways that mimic the behaviour found in offline relationships. In Dr. Whitty's research, women were more likely than men to give others emotional support (for example, in chat rooms) and be more fearful of their safety, while men were more likely than women to exaggerate socio-economic status. These gender differences in behaviour patterns are also found in face-to-face relationships.

To date, research has tended to ignore the similarities in online and offline relationships. For example, the relative lack of social cues on the Internet has been thought to render online relationships more hostile and less fulfilling than traditional face-to-face relationships. However, Dr. Whitty argues that people in online relationships utilise different kinds of social cues, such as the tone evident in text, 'emoticons' (which are symbols that represent emotions, such as :) a smile, or ;) a wink), and the use of capitals.

It is also argued that people in online relationships tell each other intimate details about themselves more quickly than do people in face-to-face relationships. However, Dr. Whitty claims that we need to consider more than just how much people self-disclose online. Rather, trust in online relationships is developed by providing contact information, such as a telephone number or address, that might lead to the relationship developing offline.
