University of Surrey Scientist Awarded 2001 Nutrition Society Silver Medal

July 10, 2001

Dr Susan New, a Lecturer in Nutrition at the University of Surrey has been awarded the prestigious Silver Medal of the UK Nutrition Society at its Diamond Jubilee Conference in Sheffield this week. She will present her Silver Medal Lecture in a plenary session to the conference, which will be attended by nutrition scientists from across the world. Dr New is a scientist in the Centre for Nutrition and Food Safety of the School of Biomedical and Life Sciences at the University of Surrey.

University of Surrey Vice Chancellor Professor Patrick Dowling said: 'I warmly congratulate Susan on this major award on behalf of the University. She has set herself a very high standard of achievement and her colleagues and students here at Guildford are very proud of her. She has made, and continues to make, a significant contribution at national and international level to the science underpinning nutrition.'

Speaking of the award, Dr New said, 'I am delighted to be receiving the Silver Medal, which I believe is the most prestigious recognition of my work I have received so far. I hope that my success will act as encouragement for the nutrition scientists of tomorrow.'

She is already the proud recipient of the following awards:
Young Investigator's Award at the 1st World Congress on Osteoporosis in 1996
Young Investigator's Award at the 7th UK Osteoporosis Conference in 2000
Young Investigator's Award at the 1st Joint Conference of the International Bone and Mineral Society and European Calcified Tissue Society in 2001.

Susan's career began to take off in 1988, when she was awarded an MRC scholarship to undertake a one year full-time MSc degree in Human Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen, following her achievement of a distinction grade in her undergraduate degree in Sports Science. Three years later, she received the Nutritional Consultative Panel UK Dairy Industry PhD Scholarship. She has a consistent track record in raising a significant research income and publication of novel scientific work and an expanding portfolio of invitations to speak at national and international conferences.
Since joining the University of Surrey, her research work has focused on three specific areas:
1) the fundamental nutrient/gene interactions for optimum perimenopausal bone health
2) the level at which physical activity and nutrition work synergistically for maximum peak bone mass attainment within an individual's genetic potential
3) how basic dietary manipulation might assist the skeleton in its role of acid/base maintenance

In particular, her work has shown a strong positive link between a high intake of fruit & vegetables and good bone health.

The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health

The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health
by T. Colin Campbell (Author), Thomas M. Campbell II (Author), Howard Lyman (Preface), John Robbins (Preface)

Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.
