DTI Awards for Environmental Biotechnology
July 06, 2001Projects to share nearly £400k
New environmentally friendly ways of treating wastewater from the textile industry are among projects to share nearly £400k in funding, announced today by the Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury.
The four new projects aim to:
? Demonstrate the use of a novel filter to clean and remove dye in wastewater from the textile industry, led by William Clark & Sons Ltd in Londonderry. A DTI grant of £189K will support the total £540k cost of the project.
? Show how computer-controlled biotechnology can treat waste from malt processing, and use the resulting gas to provide energy for the production process. This project will be led by Clean Technologies Ltd, and will take place in Nottinghamshire. It will receive a DTI grant of £122K to support the total £489k cost of the project.
? Develop filters from natural fibres, such as flax and hemp, to treat industrial wastewater. Bethan Technology Ltd, based in Sheffield, will receive DTI grant support of £48k towards the costs of £174k.
? To raise awareness in the construction industry of the biological treatment of contaminated land, and of ways to reclaim it. A series of case studies, led by the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA), will receive £35k towards the total costs of £142k.
Lord Sainsbury said:
"By creating cleaner and more cost-efficient ways of working, biotechnology offers huge potential improvements to industry and the environment.
"BIO-WISE projects help to demonstrate and raise awareness of the real benefits that biotechnology can bring. Along with last years winners, BIO-WISE has now provided almost £1million of grant support, and there is still £2million available."
The awards were presented by, David Gill, Head of HSBC's Innovation and Technology Unit. Speaking at the BIO-WISE Annual Event.
Mr Gill said:
"Biotechnology has enormous potential to support sustainable development in the UK, and provide industry with the tools it requires to enhance its environmental performance."
