Irresponsible use of fertility techniques will jeopardise the future of reproductive medicine warns new ESHRE president

July 04, 2001

Lausanne, Switzerland: The new president of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology has warned that the future of reproductive medicine and the hopes of infertile couples could be put in jeopardy by the abusive use of fertility techniques.

Professor Hans Evers from Academisch Ziekenhuis, Maastricht in the Netherlands, who takes over today for a two-year term as president, said that scientists and doctors now had the means to help thousands of childless couples to have a family, and rapidly evolving technologies had the potential to help many hundreds of thousands in the future.

But he warned: "This could change if irresponsible individuals misuse these techniques. The recent case of the 62-year-old mother who gave birth to her nephew and the declaration by some doctors that they plan to clone a human being are two examples of what I am talking about.

"At the moment we still maintain the goodwill of the majority of the public who trust us and rely on us to use these new techniques to help them. If even a small number of doctors and scientists step outside the boundaries of what is acceptable to society and to us as practitioners of reproductive medicine, there is a danger that the voluntary controls we willingly subscribe to will be replaced by stronger and stronger legislation. If that happens the future of reproductive medicine will be jeopardised and the people who suffer most will be the desperate men and women for whom we offer the only hope of ever having a child."
