Articles are available in full online at: www.bbsrc.ac.uk/news/features/current.html New chicken vaccine eliminates need for drug intake for broiler chickens A new vaccine developed from work initiated by a team of UK scientists will allow farmers to rear chickens for the dinner table without relying on a cocktail of drugs to protect flocks from the disease of coccidiosis, according to a report in the July issue of BBSRC Business. Coccidiosis, a major disease of poultry, is caused by parasites that grow within the digestive tract and is manifested as reduced growth and reduced food efficiency and, in severe cases, death. The development of the Paracox-5 vaccine will help allay concerns regarding the use of anti-parasite drugs for the production of chicken meat. page 8-9 Contact: Dr Martin W. Improving animal cell cultures - a question of life and death Researchers at the University of Birmingham have identified some of the stresses in pharmaceutical bioreactors that cause the animal cells used in drug production to die. New techniques for protein screening A speedier and potentially more accurate way of looking at interactions between large molecules is being developed by scientists at Aston University in Birmingham.
