Ignorance is bliss: the need for language and intercultural training at corporate level

British based businesses lose clients, opportunities and money due to lack of cultural, ethnic and linguistic understanding. In the 21st century global marketplace, the need for language and intercultural training at corporate level in the UK is not being met. These are the findings of Rosa-Maria Cives-Enriquez, Consultant Linguist and Managing Director of Motiva Language and Training Specialists Ltd, due to be reported at the International Conference on Communication, Problem Solving and Learning at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow on Tuesday 26th June 2001.

Currently 60 per cent of British business is conducted with the European Union, yet an average of 75 per cent of employees within major companies lack the communication skills to respond to overseas enquiries in a foreign language. Furthermore, 89 per cent of managers that responded to a questionnaire did not know that 2001 is the European Year of Languages and 99 per cent of the businesses surveyed did not have a coherent foreign language strategy in place.

Why is this so? A lack of dissemination of the relevant information at all levels in society; poorly informed decision makers not realising that there is a need for a corporate language/intercultural communications strategy; the implementation of a language communications strategy is not being seen as a short term profit-bearing activity, and hence being relegated to a "nice to have" activity; and inflexible or poorly trained language and intercultural trainers, who don't listen and fail to respond to client needs, thus adding to this ever-increasing vicious circle.
