University showcases latest research for news mediaJune 13, 2001On Tuesday 26 June Sheffield Hallam University stages a unique research presentation for the news media at its City Campus. The University has earned an excellent reputation for applied creativity and practically-oriented research, and its work often makes national and even international news. In this Research Showcase event seven researchers will be presenting outstanding examples of current research projects. Each expert will give a five-minute informal presentation to an audience of journalists and broadcasters, each introducing his latest research and its applications in everyday life and answering questions. At the end there will be time for one-to-one interviews and photographs (and the opportunity to source images and discuss filming opportunities). The presenters, all acknowledged as leading experts in their respective fields are: Tim Cooper a survey of the lifespan and disposal of domestic appliances, and the environmental and cultural issues that it has revealed Professor Chris Gratton analysing the economic impact of recent sports events and proposed sports developments Professor Mike Press Design against Crime, a project for the Home Office in partnership with the University of Salford Professor Jim Roddis a revolutionary new material for the design and construction industries Chris Rust analogous limbs for the development of prostheses and robotics Dr Alan Smith applications of a new scientific discipline - forensic engineering Matthew Simon intelligent domestic appliances -- a new international research project. Some of the presenters will have photogenic examples of their work with them, and a media pack giving concise details of their work and contact information will be provided. In addition, Professor John Parkinson, BBC TV's lead scientist during live broadcasts on the 1999 UK solar eclipse, expects to be back from Zambia on the day of the Research Showcase and available for interview after the presentations. Professor Parkinson is observing the 21 June African eclipse from a camp in a remote part of Zambia. He is conducting a series of experiments at eclipses to measure the sun and determine whether it is growing or shrinking, and has been advising the Zambian government on education and public safety measures relating to the eclipse.
