“Oscars” come to European Science and TechnologyMay 21, 2001The Commission of the EU has signed a contract with the EuroPAWS consortium to bring an awards ceremony like “The Oscars” to the worlds of TV drama and European Science and Technology. Events in Paris, London and Brussels, with links to the celebrated Paris Science TV Festival and the London PAWS Awards, will be the focus for screenings, debates and awards ceremonies. Television drama reaches an audience as large as that for news or sports programmes. It is one of the most powerful means of communication, with an ability to project values in human terms in all walks of life, and it offers the public an opportunity to appreciate the impact of science and technology on everyday life. The fundamental aim is to harness this power of television drama to enthuse broad swathes of our population with the interest, benefits and excitement of science and technology The climax of several months of activities will be European Science and Technology Week 2001. It will start on 5th November, with an Awards Evening in London. A Press Conference and Presentations Day in Brussels will follow later in the week. Also there will be local events in many European countries that will demonstrate the creative achievements in this field of European TV, and screen the prize-winning entries. There are three main components that come together in these events: 1) Two “MIDAS” Prizes for transmitted television drama bearing on science and technology. 2) A New Ideas initiative. Six grants of 3000 Euros will be awarded to the most promising ideas. The best two script treatments will receive prizes and there will also be two dramatised presentations at the Awards evening with the performances re-visited on the Brussels day. 3) A Website as a central information source for the project, and on stories, issues and people in science and technology in a European context.
