The future of British agriculture: fit for consumption?

What is the fate of agriculture in this country? This topical issue will be debated at a British Association Forum on Thursday 26 April 2001.

Debate on the future is hampered by a lack of clarity. Terms such as the environment, sustainability and animal welfare are widely cited, yet rarely do people define what they mean by them. Whose environment? Sustainability of what? Welfare of which animals?

Sir Colin Spedding, Former Chair of the Farm Animal Welfare Council and Deputy Chair of the People’s Despensary for Sick Animals believes: “The future of agriculture is not just about farming, it is about the whole food chain, and our thinking should not be a simple knee-jerk reaction to the Foot and Mouth outbreak. It must be about what society wants and needs.”

Also participating will be Dr David Shannon, Chief Scientist and Chair of MAFF’s Science Committee who had this to say: “From a scientific perspective, the revolution in the biological sciences offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance natural resistance to plant and animal disease and improve food quality. But this needs to be part of a holistic farming system that meets the needs of society.”

Joining them will be Julie Hill, Programme Advisor and former Director of Green Alliance and Deputy Chair of the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission and Ben Gill CBE, President of the National Farmers’ Union

The event will be chaired by Clive Cookson, Science Editor of the Financial Times.

The meeting is open to all, and will give people an opportunity to hear about the important issues in this debate, and to express their own opinions.

‘The future of British agriculture: fit for consumption?’ is a Science and Public Affairs Forum. It takes place on Thursday 26 April from 6.30-8.00pm at the Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London W1N 3DH.
