How victims cope with school bullying

Young people who have not been bullied think physical attack is the worst form of bullying, but those who have actually been bullied see psychological bullying such as rumour mongering and exclusion from the group as the worst form. This is one of the findings of research by Dr Mike Eslea of the University of Central Lancashire, reported today, Thursday 29 March, at The British Psychological Society’s Centenary Annual Conference, held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow.

Dr Eslea’s paper was part of a symposium on bullying. In another paper, Professor Peter Smith and Dr Lorenzo Talamelli, of Goldsmiths College, London University, showed that young people with a good network of social support, including a good group of friends, were less likely to be bullied. Victims of bullying tended to dislike other pupils and breaktime more than other groups. Professor Anthony Pellegrini of the University of Minnesota, USA, also reported that friendship groups have a crucial role to play in protecting young people from bullying. His study found that bullies are concerned with social status among their peers and may not target peers with allies or good social affiliations.




Professor Helen Cowie and Dr Paul Naylor, of the University of Surrey, Roehampton, have researched organised peer support systems in schools. They described how both pupils and teachers find these systems useful in stopping bullying. However, there were some problems, notably embarrassment (especially on the part of boys) in being seen as users of the scheme or as peer supporters.

In a further paper, Dr Ersilia Menesini and Dr Irma Favini, of the University of Florence, Italy, looked at how although submissiveness is seen as a common characteristic of victims of bullying, the submissiveness shown by children and young people may vary according to the game being played.
