On-Line System Propels LearningFebruary 19, 2001Cranfield University’s Department of Process and Systems Engineering and Department of Power Engineering and Propulsion have developed a new web-based learning system to support postgraduate and short course programmes. The ‘on-line course companion’ is intended to provide additional support to part-time students who are studying for the MSc in Process Systems Engineering and a range of associated short courses. The system was developed by Learning Materials Design, with financial support from the ADAPT programme of the European Social Fund and input from a range of academic and support staff at Cranfield. Rather than replace conventional learning methods, the system is designed to increase the effectiveness of face-to-face teaching, enabling lecturers to put together a package of web-based material that relates to their lectures. Benefits to students include helping them to prepare for lectures, consolidating their understanding and proficiency after lectures and applying information in problem-solving exercises with other students on-line. Professor Mike Sanderson, Head of the Department of Process Systems Engineering, said: “The online course companion will be particularly useful for part-time students studying for the MSc in Process Systems Engineering, as it will enable them to continue interacting with lecturers and students while away from campus.”
