sciBAr hits the Capital bringing science to familiar territory - the Bar

November 13, 2000

Australia has its 'Pub Science', Nottingham, Leeds, Lyon and Paris their Café Scientifique, and now London has the sciBAr - an informal gathering where science can be debated over a pint of beer, glass of wine or cappuccino. On Wednesday 15 November, the BA will hold the first ever sciBAr at Maddox Wine Bar, off London's Regent Street.   Leading UK scientist Professor Colin Blakemore will kick off discussion at the sciBAr on one of today's key scientific issues - risk.

There are many people with a passing interest in science and how it affects their lives, who wouldn't dream of attending a formal lecture, said Dr Peter Briggs, Chief Executive of the BA, the sciBAr is aimed at them.

Debate and discussion amongst friends and colleagues has long been the tradition in Bars and Pubs throughout the world. sciBAr takes this one step further by bringing scientists and the public together in familiar surroundings to discuss science in its broadest context. The sciBAr is open to anyone, there are no invitations and the evening is free except for what people spend on drink or food. sciBAr will be a regular event in London, starting at 6:30pm to catch the after work crowd. At future sciBAr's guest experts will cover a whole host of topical issues from stem cell therapy to food safety.

The first sciBAr will explore risk an issue at the heart of topics as diverse as BSE, mobile phones safety, GM foods and airline travel.
