Science museum displays new type of self-evolving robot
August 31, 2000Nature have today reported that a new type of robot has been developed that can evolve with minimal human intervention. American robot experts have bred generations of robots within computers – the best robots that evolve are then built by the computer.
These robots will be displayed in the Science Museum’s new exhibition – Antenna. Antenna is the world’s first constantly-updated exhibition devoted to science and technology news. Antenna is part of the new Wellcome Wing, a brand new centre for the presentation of contemporary science which opened to the public in July.
When the experiment was completed the computer built the best robots. This is the first time that this automatic manufacturing has been completed. Machines can print objects as well as documents. After breeding, the successful robot design is built, layer by layer in a 3D printer.
The robot on display, although it may not look it, is the king of the cyber-jungle. It can crawl at approximately 1cm/second, making it one of the most successful robots to evolve in its virtual world. One of the robots on display is half-finished so that visitors can see how these amazing machines can create complex plastic shapes – without any human help.
The Science Museum is open daily between 10:00 – 18:00. Visitors will be able to see the robots on display from Friday 1st September.
