Science meets the arts over a cuppaAugust 17, 2000Visitors to the sci-art cafe in the Royal College of Art could find themselves discussing light sculptures with Sir Isaac Newton over a sandwich. The sci-art café, part of creating SPARKS, the annual festival of science which is being held in London this year, will bring science and the arts together. Entry is free. “Most people categorise themselves as ‘arty’ or ‘technically minded’ as if never the twain shall meet,” commented Natalie Bealing from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, who has been putting together the programme, “But actually, there’s a big overlap. Some of the images of science in the art exhibition are quite stunning, there are intriguing experiments involving food and drink and a fun exploration of light and sound - and these are just a few of the spectacles on offer! I hope that we will make artists appreciate that science can be a source of inspiration, enable scientists to appreciate that their work can be interpreted artistically, and give the public the opportunity to be impressed and delighted.” The programme of events lasts from Friday 25 August to Tuesday 19 September, and all take place at the Royal College of Art in Kensington Gore, from 11am to 6pm. Informal, spontaneous performances in the café are mixed with more formal presentations in the seminar room, giving something for everyone. The performances and exhibitions have been organised by CLRC and sponsored by all the other research councils, BNSC, NESTA and OST.
