New CD-ROM resource contributes to sustainable management of the world’s forestsAugust 04, 2000CAB International is pleased to announce the launch of the Forestry Compendium Global Module. Truly global in concept as well as content, this unique product is the result of worldwide collaboration of the major organizations involved with forestry species. Produced with the collaboration of project partners CABI, CIFOR, PROSEA, OFI and ICRAF, and resourced by Development Consortium members: ACIAR, CABI, CIFOR, DFID, EU, GTZ, ITTO, INBAR, USAID, USDA-FS and the MacArthur Foundation. In addition, more than 200 specialists worldwide have been involved in authoring and validating data sheets and providing illustrations. Other organizations have provided technical support and information: CILF, CSIRO, FAO, SEPASAL, SAF, World Bank and WSL. Main features of this multimedia CD-ROM product are: detailed information on over 1200 tree and shrub species; an interactive advisory system to aid decision-making on choice of species; bibliographic information with 50,000 abstracts of the world’s relevant literature; TREENAMES database giving taxonomic details for over 22,000 woody species of forestry interest in tropical and temperate regions worldwide; global and regional maps showing natural and planted distribution, climate zones and soil types; illustrations including colour images and line drawings; multilingual glossary of forestry terms; ICRAF’s Tree Seed Suppliers Directory; taxonomic database of forest pests; basic data on countries including FAOSTAT statistics on land use and forest products trade; and full text of selected FAO, INBAR, ITTO and CIFOR documents.
