Nobel Laureate to Speak at SCI - Sir John Walker Receives SCI Messel Medal

July 04, 2000

Nobel Laureate SIR JOHN WALKER FRS, Director of the Medical Research Council's (MRC) Dunn Nutrition Unit, was today awarded the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) MESSEL MEDAL at the Annual Meeting of the Society.

Following the medal presentation, Sir John delivered the 2000 Messel Medal Lecture Biological Energy Conversion.Sir John received his BA degree in chemistry from St Catherine's College, Oxford and his DPhil from the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford for his work on peptide antibiotics.

Amongst other discoveries, Sir John's work has helped to uncover triple overlapping genes in G4 where all three DNA phases encode protein and uncover details of the modified genetic code in mitochondria. Much of his research is based on the premise that a detailed chemical and structural knowledge of an enzyme is required in order to understand in detail how it works.

During the past ten years, Sir John has actively collaborated with colleagues in Italy to study transport of a range of small molecules in and out of mitochondria.Since 1998, Sir John has been the Director of the MRC's Dunn Human Nutrition Unit in Cambridge, a post he took on with the aim of steering nutritional research towards the fundamental understanding of the processes involved in nutrition using molecular and genetic methods.

A number of independent research groups are being established with common and interlocking interests in modern nutrition research.SCI is proud to award Sir John the first Messel Medal of the new century and pleased to be adding a man of such distinction to the SCI roll of honour.

The recognition of scientists and the importance of their work and the encouragement of the scientists of tomorrow, play a key part in SCI activities across the world.
