Behind The Growth Of Alternative Medicine: Unmet Psychosmatic Needs Of Medical Practice
June 09, 2000The past decade has witnessed an impressive growth of alternative medicine. The Authors of this review suggest that key psychosmatic concepts (a holistic consideration of patient care; the role of psychosocial factors in affecting individual vulnerability to all types of disease; the interaction between psychosocial and biological factors in the course and outcome of disease; the application of psychological thyerapies to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of physical illness) underlie the success of alternative, non conventional medicine. In the past 60 years, psychosomatic medicine has addressed some fundamental questions, contributing to the growth of other related disciplines such as psychoneuroendocrinology, psychoimmunology and quality of life research. In a comprehensive review, Fava and Sonino suggest that psychosomatic medicine may provide a frame of reference for several current challenge of clinical medicine, including the phenomenon of somatization anf the demand for well-being. Most of medical journal are skeptical of and unlikely to publish psychosomatic papers (at most quality of life investigations since these please their advertisers). The same journals cannot understand the growth of alternative medicine.
