April 10, 2000Over half of UK academics report poor psychological health according to a paper presented today, Thursday 13 April, to The British Psychological Society's Annual Conference, held at the Guildhall, Winchester, by Gail Kinman of the University of Luton and Fiona Jones of the University of Hertfordshire.
The extent and pace of recent changes experienced by academics in general was linked with poor psychological health. In particular, two main factors were implicated - increased conflict between the demands of work and home, and a view that higher education was becoming more bureaucratic and less participative.
It appears that recent changes in higher education have led to poor psychological health in UK academics. This, together with the fact that more than half of the respondents to the survey (52 per cent) indicated that they regretted choosing an academic career and 44 per cent had seriously considered leaving higher education over the last few years, has obvious potential consequences for the quality of teaching and research in British higher education.
