JCB back new hi-tech learning centre
March 28, 2000Schoolchildren are now so sophisticated in the field of design and technology that Staffordshire University, in partnership with engineering giants JCB, is to open a pioneering new centre which will give youngsters access to state-of-the-art learning technology.
The Staffordshire University and JCB Schools Design and Technology Centre is a special collaboration between higher education, industry and schools - and is set to provide a national model to help the UK fill the chronic skills shortage in technology-related sectors.
The Staffordshire University and JCB Schools Design and Technology Centre is based within the University's School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT) in Stafford and will be officially opened on Friday, April 7, at 10.00am.
The centre, aimed at 11- to 18-year-olds, features 13 high-spec PCs to operate sophisticated computer- aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software. The centre also has a small computer controlled milling machine for precise machining of components.
"Long gone are the days of classes in technical drawing, metalwork and woodwork - the design and technology classroom of the 21st Century has moved on dramatically so that it can meet the needs of today's technology whizkids," said Centre Manager Steve Mason. "The computer literacy of modern youngsters is now so sophisticated we are having to radically develop their learning experience.
"We believe by bringing teachers and their students to a classroom based within a university the right level of support can be given. Also, by bringing school and college students on campus we can introduce them to university life and therefore encourage them to continue with their education.
"A centre like this can provide a seamless stream of education with youngsters being exposed to learning that has relevance to all stages of their educational career, including GCSE, A-levels and degree level study.
"This is an exciting project and we are confident it can provide a model for the rest of the UK to help fill the skills shortage currently experienced by British industry."
The University's School of Engineering and Advanced Technology is a centre of excellence in CAD-CAM learning. CAD-CAM has revolutionised industry and is an essential key skill forcareers in design and technology.
JCB is supporting the new centre because of its commitment to community developments and the company's vision that the UK should be encouraging more young people to become design and
technology professionals.
