Bioscience students win UK business prize

The team were chosen as winners of the 1999 Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Sceme (YES) Competition* following the two-day national final held at the Department of Trade and Industry in London, on 14 - 15 December 1999.

Four undergradyate and eight postgraduate/postdoctoral teams, selected in the regional heats, presented their 'imaginary' biotech ventures based on technology already in the public domain or on hypothetical scenarios to a distinguished panel of judges. Of the eight postgraduate teams which reached the UK finals, two were from the Institute of Biomedical & Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow.

Glasgow's five-strong winning team, with their company called Invartech, used modern molecular biology techniques to create a complex antigen which could be used to develop a diagnostic which recognised all the different strains of hepatitis C virus and could form the basis of a single vaccine which could immunise against all hepatitis C strains with a strong group of related products in the pipeline.

The winning team was made up of Reg Clayton, Ian Goodfellow, John Curran, Sarah Potter, and Stephen Murnaghan.

Team member Reg Clayton, MRC postdoctoral researcher in Virology, explained, "This conpetition was a great opportunity for young scientists to understand the commercialisation of science, and to see whats available outside academia. It was a real learning experience."

Congratulating the winning teams, the Principal Professor Sir Graeme Davies commented, "One of the outcomes of the Scottish Parliament is a real change in the position of higher education. Overall, what you are doing is reflecting this sea change in what academic institutions are regarding as their own activity. You are demonstrating our success in striving to operate as a research and development interface with industry."

Professor Ray Baker, Chief Executive of BBRSC and member of the postgraduate/postdoctoral judging panel said, "The standard of presentations was extremely high. The business ideas were innovative and conveyed with enthusiasm and energy." The BBRSC is one of the main sponsors of the competition.
