Parenting and behaviour problems in children
December 16, 1999A framework for understanding the normal variations of parenting is necessary when considering the tasks facing parents of children with behaviour problems and/or disabilities. This is one of the issues raised in a symposium today, Tuesday 21 December, presented by members of the Department of Psychology, University of Southampton, at The British Psychological Society's London Conference, held at the Institute of Education.
Professor Edmund Sonuga-Burke, Professor Jim Stevenson, Dr Margaret Thompson, Ms Deb Cornah and Ms Alex Raynor presented their research on types of parenting and the association with child and parent characteristics. They suggest that strictness, displayed in a context of care and emotional warmth, is the most effective parenting style.
Mr David Daley, Dr Thompson and Professor Sonuga-Burke presented evidence supporting the value of parent training in the treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. This challenged the assumption that psycho-stimulant medication is a necessary component of treatment for this disorder, particularly in pre-school children.
Other papers in the symposium addressed topics such as; maternal attributions of behaviour problems in their own and other children and the impact on parents of behaviour problems in children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
