The high mountain station in the Pamirs was destroyed by banditsNovember 04, 1999More than thirty years ago V.K.Nosdruhin, the expedition chief of the Central Asia Hydrometeorological Institute, proposed to organize a stationary base to observe glaciers. The base was placed on the Abramov glacier in the Pamirs. This place, in the Alaisky ridge, is a most beautiful one. The observatory with three subdivisions was constructed by different specialists for several years. The first subdivision was placed below the glacier tongue. The floating glaciological one was in the middle of the glacier. The third subdivision for the common research was on the cliff. Thus at the altitude of 4000-4300 m one of the best high mountain science station in the world was created. There was glaciological, hydrological, meteorological research on the base used to prediction catastrophes. The glacier life by boring its thickness was studied there. A study was made of an impurity distribution in glacier layers to watch a global environmental contamination. For the first time at such an altitude the bulldozer was used. Many people from different countries worked and lived on the Abramov glacier. In the September 1999 this unique science base was plundered and burned by bandits intervened to the Kirghizia.
