Dental health improves but North-South divide existsSeptember 08, 1999The image of toothless old folk is fast becoming outdated as the health of people's teeth improves, according to one of the authors of a report published today (Wednesday), who is available to be interviewed. The report also provides evidence of a North-South divide, with tooth decay more prevalent in Northern England, where people are also more likely to have lost their teeth by old age. The Adult Dental Health Survey is published every ten years by the Office for National Statistics, which collaborates with a number of dental experts to carry out research. One of the researchers involved is Dr Jimmy Steele, of Newcastle University Dental School, who said: 'The image of toothless old people is fast disappearing. The fact is that over-65s are much more likely to retain some of their teeth than they were a decade ago. 'Tooth decay and disease have decreased in adults generally and I think this is because of better treatment and the changing attitude people have towards dental health. The difference over the past 30 years, when the survey was first published, is dramatic. 'However, there is a North-South divide. People in the North are lagging behind people in the South by about ten years in terms of the health of their teeth.' Dr Steele believes that the rise in the number of older people with teeth, and the overall improvement in dental health, will have many implications for dentists and dental services in the future.
