Ambulance workers at risk of post-traumatic stress disorder
September 03, 1999
These were the findings of a study published today, Friday 10 September, in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology, by clinical psychologists Sue Clohessy and Professor Anke Ehlers of Oxford University. Fifty-six paramedics and technicians completed a questionnaire about their stressful experiences at work. Incidents involving children, dealing with relatives of patients, and dealing with burns patients were among the most stressful. Such experiences can be traumatising.
Those who tried to suppress spontaneous memories of the event(s), tried to numb their emotions or ruminated about questions like what they could have done differently or what would happen if something like that happened to their families were more likely to have PTSD than those who did not use such coping strategies.
"Unfortunately for these workers," said Professor Ehlers, "unwanted memories that pop into one's mind without apparent reason are among the normal reactions to traumatic events and cannot be prevented by suppressing them. Similarly, numbing emotional reactions in the aftermath of such events is not helpful. These experiences require a certain amount of 'working through.'"
