Disabled in the nurseryAugust 23, 1999Working with 20 pre-school children (average age three and a half years), the researchers measured the popularity of a child with walking and talking disabilities with their classmates, as well as the relative understanding about disability which these children held. The findings show that the children appeared to have no understanding of disability, perceiving their wheelchair bound classmate as needing to be nurtured and protected. While the disabled child was seen as different, this was not in a negative sense; the children playing with the disabled child saw that child as a popular member of the group. While having important implications for teachers in nursery schools, further work needs to identify at which age children grasp an understanding of disability and begin to form prejudices against disabled children.
