Diabetes Research Centre Opens at Plymouth

July 27, 1999

The research programme will be conducted from brand new offices in the Department of Child Health at Derriford Hospital, which will be officially opened on Wednesday 28 July at 1pm. The Centre comprises a laboratory for the preparation and cold storage of samples and an office. It has been built and equipped by a £340,000 donation from the Earlybird Diabetes Trust - a local diabetes research charity which won a bid of £100,000 in support of the venture from Smith's Charity in London.

The medical side of the study will be supervised by Professor Terry Wilkin, Professor of Medicine and consultant endocrinologist at Derriford Hospital, Dr Mike Murphy, consultant chemical pathologist and Dr Harry Baumer, consultant paediatrician. The research team will be led by Dr Linda Voss, who has run the Wessex Growth Study, which has become known for the quality of its data on childhood growth and psychosocial development, for the past 13 years. Other members of the team are Bradley Metcalf, a statistician, Louise Noble, a senior dietician, and research nurses, Sue Howdle and Jane Michie.

Professor Wilkin said: 'I would publicly like to express my sincere thanks to all those who have made this initiative possible - the Countess of Arran and the Smith's Charity, Mrs Jo Park and the Earlybird Diabetes Trust, Mrs Isobel Down and her team in the Department of Child Health and Dr Harry Baumer and his consultant colleagues at Derriford Hospital.'

There is a rising incidence of diabetes in adults and the disease has now become one of the most worrying health problems in the Western world. Diabetes is serious as a health risk because of its complications. It is the commonest cause of blindness in the Western world and the commonest reason for needing a kidney transplant. Heart attacks are three times more common in people with adult diabetes.

Since diabetes is virtually unknown in under-developed countries, it is crucially important to find out what factors in the Western lifestyle are responsible for causing the disease. There are clues to suggest that the earliest changes which lead to adult diabetes start in childhood and the Earlybird team will therefore be seeking to establish what they are, what causes them and why they develop in some children, but not in others.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the official opening and launch ceremony. Mrs Jo Park, Chair of the Earlybird Diabetes Trust, will hand over the cheque that has made the project possible and members of the research team will be on hand to answer questions and give interviews. Please contact Sue Bradbury, Head of Public Relations, on (01752) 233987 to confirm your attendance.
