GM crops and world agricultureJuly 21, 1999The session agreed that GM crops are one important element in the future of food production and agriculture worldwide. It identified both common themes and local differences between regions in their approaches to GM crops. There was a shared commitment by all participants to: basing GM policy on the best scientific evidence about benefits and risks; ensuring that the benefits of GM technology accrue to local economies and to consumers; encouraging an intellectual property regime that promotes agricultural innovation and is equitable to all concerned. The seven Academies agreed to develop an authoritative joint statement dealing with such issues as: the need for GM plants in local agriculture to feed the world's population in the coming decades; health and environmental issues; ways of ensuring that GM technologies benefit local populations; and relations between public and privately funded GM research. Sir Aaron Klug, OM, President of the Royal Society, welcomed this initiative: 'This is an important project in which independent Academies from North, South, East and West are pooling their expertise to address issues of global significance.
