TRANSLATION ROUTER PROJECT WILL EASE DECISION-MAKING PRESSURES
June 22, 1999The Transrouter Project, which is receiving EC funding, involves language services organisation Berlitz International, and groups in Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany, as well as the University of Edinburgh researchers. The project will develop prototype decision support tools for users of translation technology. These tools will help translation project managers in making a decision about the best mix of human and computer-aided translation resources for a given set of documents.
This method will ease the pressure of decision-making, and will benefit individuals or agencies who have to deal with the translation of large volumes of text. The tool developed by Transrouter will partly rely on information supplied by the user but will do much of its work automatically, based on computer analysis of the characteristics of the text. The proposed tool will also help those who are considering investing in computer aids to translation, but who need to weigh up the benefits and costs.
The University of Edinburgh's grant for their part of this project is £35,764, and the work is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
