RESEARCH AIMS TO HELP THOSE WITH CHRONIC LUNG DISEASE
June 21, 1999
The Novartis Horsham Research Centre has awarded a grant of £143,846 to William MacNee, Professor of Respiratory and Environmental Medicine, to investigate COPD with a view to helping develop anti-inflammatory therapy for the condition. Explains Professor MacNee: "COPD is characterised by inflammation in the airways and destruction of the gas exchanging region of the lungs, which can seriously limit a patient's ability to breathe. Exacerbations of COPD place a huge burden on health care resources in the UK."
He adds: "Inflammation occurs in the airspaces of patients with COPD. During exacerbations of COPD, there is an influx of white blood cells into the lungs. These white blood cells leave the bloodstream and move to the site of infection or inflammation in the tissues, where they destroy invading pathogens (disease producing organisms) by the release of substances such as toxic oxygen radicals."
The blood and tissues contain anti-oxidants, which protect against these damaging oxidants, but an excessive amount of oxidant release can 'overburden' them.
Says Professor MacNee: "As oxidants are known to be involved in signalling for the release of mediators which direct the inflammatory response, we believe that this oxidant stress may play a central role in inflammation, and contribute to the development of an exacerbation of COPD."
The 24-month project will assess the oxidant stress in the lungs and in the blood, and relate this to markers of inflammation and the molecular events controlling inflammation in patients with acute and stable COPD. In turn, this information may be used to help develop anti-inflammatory therapy, which would allow doctors to redress the oxidant stress, and so protect the lungs and other tissues from the effects of toxic oxygen radicals.
