BBSRC regrets destruction of GM crop

June 07, 1999

The crops were destroyed at the orders of the farm's trustees but BBSRC maintains that there is absolutely no scientific justification for this destruction as there was no risk of cross-pollination with:

  • organic oilseed rape, as it is not grown in the UK>

  • any of the other Brassica crops capable of cross-pollinating with oilseed rape, as none of them are grown as seed crops in the UK and therefore are not let to flower.

Oilseed rape would not be able to cross-pollinate with the other organic crops growing on the farm where the trial is being held.

Professor Ray Baker FRS, BBSRC Chief Executive, said: "Investigating the environmental effects of genetically modified crops is of the utmost importance in helping us to understand how this technology can be safely used to the benefit of agriculture. True environmental conditions cannot be replicated inside a laboratory, and it is therefore important that these trials are allowed to proceed under controlled conditions in the field".
