May 17, 1999Major organisations from physics and industry are joining Optics 21 in Germany and the UK Consortium for Photonics and Optics (UK CPO). These are campaigns to promote industrial optics and both are modelled on the Harnessing Light campaign in the US.
The German campaign has just begun. UK CPO, which will be an organisation of optics bodies, is preparing to go public this Autumn.
The campaigns will emphasise the many technologies that are possible or excel only because of optics.
For example, light is the most accurate way to measure length or time. It may be the only way to prove the existence of gravity waves.
In fertility treatment, low power lasers are capable of piercing a tiny hole in an unfertilised egg and then seizing an individual sperm to insert it
through the opening.
In everyday life, optics has demonstrated the health effects of ultraviolet light. Telephones, faxes, and computer printers would cease to operate without lasers and LEDs.
