How chilly was the last ice age?
May 03, 1999Polar oceans permanently covered with ice, temperatures ten to twelve degrees Celsius lower than today in the North Atlantic region, tropical oceans on the other hand only two degrees Celsius below modern values: Until quite recently these were the general ideas climate researchers had about the climax of the last ice age 20.000 years ago. Now investigations with newly developed geochemical methods call these strong temperature differences into question. These findings suggest that the tropical oceans cooled down by about five degrees Celsius. A similar, or even higher, degree of cooling is proposed for the continents near the equator.
The question of what the global climate of the last ice age really looked like, will be discussed by about fifty scientists from eight countries at an international workshop, which takes place next week (May 3rd - 6th) at the Hanse Instiute for Advanced Study in Delmenhorst, northwestern Germany. The workshop will be the first in a series of planned meetings within a project called EPILOG: „Environmental Processes during an Ice Age - Land, Ocean, and Glaciers". EPILOG itself is part of IMAGES, the marine body of PAGES („Past Global Changes"), a core project of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme.
The workshop will be a new international attempt to standardise and archive new palaeoclimatic information. „Our aim is to come up with improved temperature maps and a global synthesis on Last Ice Age conditions," says geoscientist Ralph Schneider. „Climate researchers urgently need this information not only to reconstruct former climate stages more precisely but also to provide boundary conditions for climate modellers working on predictions of future changes of global climate."
