Creativity and Cognition Research Studios

At a time of increasing international interest in the cross over between the arts, sciences and new technology, Loughborough University has been chosen as the home of the Creativity and Cognition Research Studios, with the aid of nearly £0.6M from Government and industry. The Studios will provide a major advance in computer-based work in the visual arts. Artists, scientists and technologists will be supported in equal measure - with opportunities to work creatively on the boundaries of their subjects developing new theory, new technology and new art practice.

The Creativity and Cognition Research Studios will conduct multi-disciplinary research into creative media and technology, digital art practice and creative cognition. The work covers new technology, evolving art practices and issues in cognitive science - and is particularly concerned with the conjunction of these areas. The results will influence new developments at the boundaries of art, science and technology.

The Studios will emphasise interactive art including work designed for the World Wide Web. Activities include demonstrations of technological potentials for art practice; artist-in-residence programmes and exhibitions; research in creative media, art practice and creative cognition; research training at Masters and PhD level; and international conferences.

The new venture complements a strong range of existing research and development in art and technology at Loughborough University, which hosted the ground breaking 'Creativity and Cognition' international symposia in 1993 and 1996. The next such meeting will be in October 1999. The Director of the Studios, Professor Ernest Edmonds, led the DTI Mission to Japan in 1998 to look at Art and Technology Intersection.

Collaboration is a hallmark of the Studio's approach, including inter-departmental work within the University - particularly involving the School of Art and Design - and national and international collaborations. Current external collaborators include the ATR Media Integration and Communications Research Laboratories, Kyoto, the Association for Computing Machinery, New York, and Silicon Graphics Ltd. The growing international links expand the interest to other arts, such as music.

Exhibitions will be organised to show the results of the art work developed as well as conferences to announce the scientific outcomes. All aspects will be made available on the Studios' Web site.

Loughborough University has also taken a lead role in the Gallery of the Future, a consortium project with Charnwood Borough and Leicestershire City Councils to develop the use of new technology in art and increase access to art through events, exhibitions and interactive art on the Internet. Professor Edmonds commented, "I believe that this new centre will make a significant contribution to the Gallery of the Future, to which the University is already strongly committed."
