A computer can effectively treat people with anxiety problems.

The findings of a study were reported today, Sunday 11 April, by Dr Jim White, a Chartered clinical psychologist from the Lansdown Clinic in Glasgow, at The British Psychological Society's Division of Clinical Psychology Conference held in Belfast.

Jim White and his colleagues, Ray Jones, Eliedh McGarry and Blair Cowan from the University of Glasgow, have developed a computer system which is installed in GP surgeries. The interactive multi-media CD-ROM treatment programme uses a touch screen to help people who are not used to keyboards. Through answering questions put by the computer, people are taught about anxiety and associated problems like panic attacks, phobias and insomnia. Based on the answers they give, they are then able to design their own treatment.

Twenty-six patients with chronic and severe anxiety disorders from a socially deprived area in the west of Scotland took part in the study. They were followed up six months after they had received one assessment and two treatment sessions on a computer. Almost all the patients improved, with 50 per cent showing particularly significant improvement. Over three-quarters of those who took part said they would highly recommend the computer approach to others, and half had changed their views on the causes of their anxiety.

Dr White said: "The study shows that we now have an effective form of therapy that is readily available, easily understood and personally relevant to those who need it. The package will help to make sure that people who need therapy receive it quickly and could help to reduce waiting times."
