Drug users unaware of memory problems
March 26, 1999Ecstasy and cannabis do impair memory - but regular users don't think so.
These findings are presented today, Thursday 8 April, by Dr. Jacqui Rodgers and Dr Dave Sanders of the University of Sunderland, at The British Psychological Society's Annual Conference held in Belfast.
The researchers gave various memory tests to three participant groups; regular ecstasy users; regular cannabis users; and those using neither drug. Drug users definitely had memory problems, particularly in the recall of verbal information. Moreover, the ecstasy users found it difficult to recall information from long term memory.
The most striking finding was that there were no differences amongst groups when individuals rated their own memory performance. Drug users were unaware of any disruptive effects on their memory ability.
"Given that cannabis is seen as a useful substance for ameliorating the midweek low associated with (weekend) ecstasy use," said Dr. Rodgers, "it's important to test for memory impairment in both types of drug user."
