Tour takes Physics far and wideFebruary 02, 1999A lecture "Particles and the Universe" aimed at the 16-19 age range, organised by the Institute of Physics, is being given in 40 venues in Britain during the current academic year, in what is the largest schools lecture tour ever staged by the IOP. The lecture is given by Professor Peter Kalmus of Queen Mary and Westfield College. In his talk, which contains experimental demonstrations, he links elementary particle physics with astronomy and cosmology, and shows how experiments in high energy laboratories give us information about the early universe. So far he has given 18 lectures in England, Scotland, and Wales to a total audience of about 5,000 school students. Information about the remaining 22 lectures can be found on the Institute of Physics Web site. Peter Kalmus is active in the public understanding of science. He is an eminent researcher and has conducted particle physics experiments in the UK, USA, Germany and CERN, receiving the Rutherford Medal for his contributions to the discovery of the W and Z particles. He is Vice-President of the Institute of Physics and of the Royal Institution. Contact numbers Professor Peter Kalmus.
