PROJECT EXAMINES NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND AGRICULTUREJanuary 22, 1999Professor Joyce Tait of the Research Centre for Social Sciences at the University of Edinburgh is joint co-ordinator of the 44-month project, which arose from her earlier work with Scottish Natural Heritage entitled 'Targeted Inputs for a Better Rural Environment' (TIBRE). Says Professor Tait: "In this project, we worked with some of the largest and most competitive arable farmers in Scotland to find out how new technology could help them to remain highly productive and at the same time promote the sustainability of the farming system and the biodiversity of the countryside." The new research, undertaken with partners from the Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark and Austria, will analyse policies and market-related factors relevant to agricultural and other similar industries, and look at the ways these factors affect company decision-making, and the knock-on effects on employment, international competitiveness and environmental benefits. Policies relating to international trade, innovation in agriculture-related industries, environmental protection, and wildlife biodiversity in arable farming areas are some of the topics to be investigated. The industry-based section of the research will take in all the major multinational companies operating in Europe, including those based in Switzerland, all relevant trade associations, public sector research establishments and small companies where appropriate. The project aims to contribute to the development of sustainable industrial and farming systems and an improved quality of life by encouraging the development and uptake of 'cleaner' technology for intensive agriculture.
