December 23, 1998'We will be comparing the 3D beach evolution and sediment transport in the CRF model with measurements made on the Sussex coast at Elmer, on which the model is based,' explains Dr Chadwick, Reader in Coastal Engineering. 'The CRF data will also be compared against calculations of beach evolution and sediment transport derived from numerical models. These comparisons will help to improve the accuracy of the physical and numerical models that are used in the design of defences for other beaches.'
The CRF, the only facility of its kind, uses sophisticated wave generators and current-producing pumps to model random, directional sea states and various tidal levels. It has been used in a wide variety of research projects by universities and commercial companies from all over the world.
Using the unique wave measurement systems that they have developed, Dr Chadwick and his group are involved in a number of UK and European field-based research projects. Several research grants have been awarded to fund the work.
