First Images from New Instrument at the ESO VLT

September 23, 1998

On this occasion, ESO has issued a joint Press Release with
three German institutes of the FORS Consortium that is published
simultaneously at their respective websites. It contains several
spectacular sky photos obtained with FORS during the past days.

Yesterday, new photos from Paranal were published about the
arrival of the second 8.2-m mirror and its cell, later to be
attached to the second VLT Unit Telescope (UT2). Please look at URL:

Also yesterday, the central part of the heavy baseframe of
the third VLT Unit Telescope (UT3) was installed on
the floor of the third enclosure. It is the biggest lift
of the assembly process and along with the centerpiece,
the most difficult. It went very smoothly - practice from the
assembly of UT1 and UT2 makes perfect!
