Parents-and-babies to be filmed in co-sleeping study

The study sets out to examine the natural interaction between parents and babies asleep together, which some researchers have suggested could help to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or cot-death. The results could help to clarify advice to new parents.

The research team is recruiting 40 couples to volunteer to have a small infra-red video camera in their bedroom for three nights to monitor patterns of sleep behaviour. They will study situations involving mother and baby, and father-and-mother plus baby.

The project is being conducted by Dr Helen Ball, Lecturer in Anthropology, and Ms Elaine Hooker, based at University College, Stockton. Their initial studies have covered the North Tees health district and for the video project they are looking for volunteer families with babies under five months old in the same area: Stockton, Norton, Billingham, Eaglescliffe, Yarm, Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick.

Elaine Hooker said: "We have already conducted surveys which show that 88 per cent of babies are taken at some stage into their parents' bed to sleep, though for some it only happens occasionally. Where co-sleeping is common, it is usually with both parents and there has been very little research in that area."

In non-western cultures it is the custom for newborn babies to sleep with their mothers rather than in a separate cot, often in a different room. Research in Britain and America has so far been inconclusive about the risks and benefits involved in parent-baby co-sleeping, but some studies have suggested that it could help to reduce the risk of SIDS.

The Durham research aims to provide policy-makers, health professionals and parents themselves with clearer information.

The Durham project has already involved health visitors in the North Tees area and has the backing of paediatricians working on Co-sleeping and SIDS at St Michael's Hospital and Department of Child Health, University of Bristol. It is funded by the Nuffield Foundation.
