Southampton gets ready for largest ever Unmanned Underwater Vehicle ShowcaseAugust 28, 1998Over 80 of the world's leading developers and manufacturers of unmanned underwater vehicles and sub-systems are gathering in Southampton next week (2-3 September), to take part in the largest ever Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Showcase (UUVS 98). UUVS 98 has attracted an impressive international delegation and is being held at the Southampton Oceanography Centre, home of Autosub1-the UK's leading pilotless deep-sea research vehicle. As well as a host of exhibitions, seminars and poster displays, there will be live demonstrations of selected vehicles in the Centre's dockside, and latest news from Autosub1's current study in Bermuda. Ocean Scientific International Ltd, one of the Southampton Oceanography Centre's commercial collaborators will be displaying their compact towed vehicle, MiniBAT, which can carry a range of sensors for taking chemical and physical measurements of ocean properties. German company, STN Atlas Electronik will be demonstrating K-Fisch-a battery powered, remotely controlled vehicle which is fitted with both sonar and colour cameras and can dive to 300 metres. A variety of other events will also be taking place during the showcase.m/f Notes for editors UUVS 98 takes place on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 September at the Southampton Oceanography Centre. UUVS98 builds on the success of the first ever showcase held in Southampton last year and has been organized by Spearhead Exhibitions Ltd, in association with the Southampton Oceanography Centre.
