Custom filler material produces excellent paint without common damage to mixing equipmentMay 22, 2006Micronized silica for paint industry produced via fine grinding jet mill In order to produce paint of the highest possible quality, the raw materials must be tightly controlled. This includes the mineral fillers that make up to 50% of the paint. Filler materials like calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin and silica largely govern paint properties like UV resistance, weatherability, abrasion resistance and sheen. Modern exterior latex paints typically use silica as a filler material, however it is particularly abrasive to paint mixing equipment and causes expensive wear damage. This study by Samayamutthirian Palaniandy, Khairun Azizi Mohd Azizli, Ee Xun Hong, Syed Fuad Saiyid Hashim and Hashim Hussin from Universiti Sains Malaysia looks at controlling particle size and shape of silica paint filler to enhance the properties of paint while minimising damage to mixing equipment. The researchers found that fine grinding of silica in a jet mill with controlled operational parameters produced high quality silica for the paint industry with beneficial morphological attributes such as particle size distribution, particle shape and surface texture. The filler that they prepared was also advantageous in that sharp edges of the grains of silica were removed in the milling process. This results in a high quality filler that is far less damaging to mixing equipment which would in turn prolong the life of expensive equipment, reducing costs as well as the likelihood of contamination from wear particles. This is because the carbon black can be used as filler material and can beneficially modify the electrical and mechanical properties of the used matrixes. Research paves way for new composite materials Northwestern University researchers have developed a process that promises to lead to the creation of a new class of composite materials - "graphene-based materials." Packing the home in a Dewars flask Cars and homes have one thing in common: They consume energy in the form of oil or gas. Energy-efficient vehicles typically make use of lightweight materials and improved engine technologies, and soon home builders will also need to pay greater attention to environmental concerns in their designs. New legislation became effective in Germany last year: It stipulates high energy-saving standards for new building construction and a reduction in the heat energy requirements in existing buildings. Apart from modern and efficient heating systems, thermal insulation makes the biggest difference. Vacuum insulation panels (VIP) could well be the material of the future. Until now, such panels have bee Rocket technology retards combustibility Every fire is literally a red-hot situation. While wood is a popular building material, it also has the disadvantage of being an excellent fuel. Intumescent coatings (from the Latin intumescere, to swell up) can help to delay the combustion of wood. Above a specific temperature, these protective coatings form a soft, carbonaceous foam that shields the underlying wood from oxygen and lowers the heat impact. "But this foam is easily carried away by mechanical forces which usually don't occur during laboratory testing," explains Dirk Kruse of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI. "They are due to strong air convections or the jet of fire-extinguishers. As a result, the wo More Filler Material Current Events and Filler Material News Articles |
