Male praying mantids prefer not to be victims of sexual cannibalism
July 27, 2006
Female praying mantids are notorious for sexual cannibalism - that is, for eating their male partner during mating. However, the possibility that males may also have something to gain from this violent act has never been resolved experimentally. In a paper in the August issue of The American Naturalist, Jonathan Lelito and William Brown (SUNY-Fredonia), study male risk-taking behavior in a praying mantis by altering the risk of cannibalism and observing changes in male behavior. They find that the males are able to assess the risk of cannibalism and become more cautious in the presence of particularly hungry females. "We know that hungry females are more likely to cannibalize and a head-on orientation makes it easier for her to attack the male with her predatory front legs," says Brown.
Lelito and Brown thus varied female hunger and physical orientation in order to assess how male mantids respond to variation in the risk of cannibalism. They found that males responded to greater risk by slowing their approach, increasing courtship behavior, and mounting from a greater - and possibly safer - distance.
"This shows that male mantids actively assess variation in risk and change their behavior to reduce the chance of being cannibalized," explains Brown. "Males are clearly not complicit, and the act of sexual cannibalism in praying mantids is an example of extreme conflict between the sexes."

The Praying Mantids
by Frederick R. Prete (Editor), Harrington Wells (Editor), Patrick H. Wells (Editor), Lawrence E. Hurd (Editor)
Praying mantids have fascinated people for thousands of years. In their Book of the Dead, ancient Egyptians honored the mantis as a minor deity, the "Bird-Fly," whose function was to conduct the souls of the dead to the netherworld. The Chinese bred mantids for fighting and celebrated their ferocity and foolhardy courage (they sometimes attack prey larger than themselves) in songs and poems. Today, mantids continue to seize the imaginations of serious researchers and backyard naturalists with their dramatic method of capturing prey, their bizarre "sexual cannibalism," and their appeal as "beneficial" insects. The Praying Mantids represents the current state of knowledge on these remarkable insects, bringing together all that is currently understood about their ecology, taxonomy,...

Preference for habitats with low structural complexity in the praying mantid Ciulfina sp. (Mantidae) [An article from: Acta Oecologica]
by P.J. Hill (Author), G.I. Holwell (Author), A. Goth (Author), M.E Herberstein (Author)
This digital document is a journal article from Acta Oecologica, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description: Habitat selection by mobile animals is strongly influenced by habitat characteristics that allow for effective predator avoidance, increased foraging efficiency and reproductive success. Often predator avoidance takes priority; this can be achieved through choosing habitats with high structural complexity. By contrast, the praying mantid Ciulfina inhabits structurally simple tree trunk habitats in woodlands and rainforests of northern Queensland, Australia. Field observations and experiments revealed a strong...
