Argonne National Laboratory plays key role in new climate simulations

February 16, 2007

The Model Coupling Toolkit created by the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory played a key role in the climate simulations used in preparing the new U.N. report "Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis."

The report, a summary of which was issued February 2nd, issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, presents a comprehensive assessment of the world's knowledge about climate change and its potential impacts on society.

In preparing the report, summary and the full report, to be issued in May, scientists used climate models from all over the world to perform simulations of how climate has changed over the past century and how it might change in the future. The Model Coupling Toolkit, or MCT, enabled researchers to "couple" the numerous individual models used in the Community Climate System Model (CCSM), one of the principal climate models used in the simulations, into a single system.

The Community Climate System Model (CCSM) is a fully coupled global climate model that provides state-of-the-art computer simulations of the Earth's past, present, and future climate states. The Model Coupling Toolkit (MCT) is an open source software library for constructing parallel coupled models from individual parallel models. MCT is designed for high performance and portability.

All of the simulations of the Community Climate System Model used the Model Coupling Toolkit.

"Such coupling allows many different models of sea, air, land, and ice to function as one integrated climate model," said Robert Jacob, a computational scientist in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. "This is a very complex model of the Earth's climate and is used to predict climate change, leading to more detailed and accurate predictions of future climate."

"The capabilities provided by MCT were essential for the successful application of CCSM in this major international climate assessment," said Bill Collins, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and a contributing author to the climate change report.

The report, the fourth in a series, presents new projections of future global climate, as well as analysis of greenhouse gases and other factors driving climate change. It will be complemented by two other reports to be released this spring, one focusing on impacts and one on mitigation measures.

"I'm proud of the role MCT played in these latest simulations," said Jacob. "We are already enhancing the toolkit to perform higher-resolution simulations in support of the next report, due out in 2013."

Record highs far outpace record lows across US
Spurred by a warming climate, daily record high temperatures occurred twice as often as record lows over the last decade across the continental United States, new research shows.

Key new ingredient in climate model refines global predictions
For the first time, climate scientists from across the country have successfully incorporated the nitrogen cycle into global simulations for climate change, questioning previous assumptions regarding carbon feedback and potentially helping to refine model forecasts about global warming.

How to limit risk of climate catastrophe
A new analysis of climate risk, published by researchers at MIT and elsewhere, shows that even moderate carbon-reduction policies now can substantially lower the risk of future climate change.

The Arctic offers more evidence of human influences on climate change
A new study indicates that Arctic temperatures suddenly increased during the last 50 years of the period from 1 AD to the year 2000. Because this warming occurred abruptly during the 20th Century while atmospheric greenhouse gases were accumulating, these findings provide additional evidence that humans are influencing climate.

New research announced at the international Water in a changing climate science conference in Melbourne 24-28 August, implicates pollution from Asia, Europe and North America as a contributor to recent Australian rainfall changes.

Climate models confirm more moisture in atmosphere attributed to humans
When it comes to using climate models to assess the causes of the increased amount of moisture in the atmosphere, it doesn't much matter if one model is better than the other.

Scientists expect wildfires to increase as climate warms in the coming decades
As the climate warms in the coming decades, atmospheric scientists at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and their colleagues expect that the frequency of wildfires will increase in many regions.

New simulation shows consequences of a world without Earth's natural sunscreen
Nearly two-thirds of Earth's ozone is gone -- not just over the poles, but everywhere. The infamous ozone hole over Antarctica, first discovered in the 1980s, is a year-round fixture, with a twin over the North Pole. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation falling on mid-latitude cities like Washington, D.C., is strong enough to cause sunburn in just five minutes.

Introduction To Three-dimensional Climate Modeling

Introduction To Three-dimensional Climate Modeling
by Warren M. Washington; Claire L. Parkinson (Author)

This book provides an introduction to the development of three-dimensional climate models, including their four major components: atmosphere, ocean, land/vegetation, and sea ice. The fundamental processes in each component and the interactions among them are explained using basic scientific principles, and elements of the numerical methods used in solving the model equations are also provided. The authors show how the theory and models grew historically and how well they are able to account for known aspects of the climate system. This book is written so that a reader who is only vaguely aware of climate models will be able to gain an understanding of what the models are attempting to simulate, how the models are constructed, what the models have succeeded in simulating, and how the...

Economic Models of Climate Change: A Critique

Economic Models of Climate Change: A Critique
by Stephen J. De Canio (Author)

The climate policy debate has been dominated by economic estimates of the costs of policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Yet the models used to derive those estimates are based on assumptions that have largely gone untested. The conventional approach embodies structural features that rule out alternative market outcomes. In addition, the distribution of "climate rights" is crucial to determining the economic affects of various policies. Bringing these considerations to the forefront shows how domestic and international policy solutions might be found.
