Somatostatin in Digestive Diseases: Improving the Treatment Options (Digestion)
by C. Scarpignato (Author)
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding, acute pancreatitis and postoperative complications after major pancreatic surgery have posed a persistent and often frustrating challenge to gastroenterologists, endoscopists and digestive surgeons. In this supplement, a team of international experts presents an in-depth review of the management of these difficult clinical conditions with somatostatin. After a review of the clinical pharmacology and safety of somatostatin and its analogues, an overview of the management strategies in upper gastrointestinal bleeding is presented. The place of somatostatin in the treatment of variceal and nonvariceal bleeding is then analyzed, attempting to better define the best drug and regimen. Finally the management of pancreatic fistula and prevention of postoperative...

Peptides in Oncology II: Somatostatin Analogues and Bombesin Antagonists (Recent Results in Cancer Research)
by K. Hoffken (Editor)
This volume provides an overview of the mechanisms of action and clinical efficacy of gonadotropin (luteinizing) hormone releasing (LH-RH) agonists and antagonists in hormone-sensitive neoplastic diseasis. It contains a detailed description of structural and functional aspects and presents the latest clinical results in treating benign and malignant neoplasias with LH-RH agonists as well as a detailed review of present knowledge of LH-RH antagonists.

Somatostatin (Endocrine Updates)
by Coimbatore B. Srikant (Editor)
This volume presents the state-of-the-art description of the current understanding of the biology of somatostatin including its gene regulation, prosomatostatin processing, cellular effects, somatostatin receptor subtypes, mechanism of action, signal transduction, regulation of cell growth and apoptosis, design and use of receptor subtype-selective somatostatin analogs, derivatives of somatostatin analogs tagged with radionuclides/chemotoxins, and their clinical relevance in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Each chapter is written by expert(s) active in somatostatin research (experimental and/or clinical). It will serve as the only single one-stop source of the most up to date information on the basic and clinical aspects of the biology of somatostatin and its receptors.

Somatostatin (Basic and Clinical Aspects of Neuroscience, Vol 4)
by Yogesh C. Patel (Author), Robert M. Post (Contributor)
This volume deals with all the known aspects of somatostatin, one of the phylogenetically oldest hormones, which is a regulatory peptide with remarkable characteristics. It is a non-classical neurotransmitter discovered less than 20 years ago in both the central nervous system and in the gastroenteropancreatic system, regulating the secretion of both pituitary and digestive hormones. It also ensures nutrient homeostasis and has therapeutic uses.

Somatostatin Analogues: Basic and Clinical Perspectives Meeting, Sorrento, November, 1995 (Digestion)
by R. Arnold (Editor)
This supplement issue focuses on important aspects of somatostatin, its long-acting analogues and its receptor subtypes. It discusses the advancing knowledge about how somatostatin and its analogues act on its targets, and the implications of these advances for diagnosis and treatment.

Somatostatin: Webster's Timeline History, 1869 - 2005
by Icon Group International (Author)
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Somatostatin," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Somatostatin in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Somatostatin when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social...

Somatostatin Analogs in Cancer Management (Chemotherapy Supplement)
by C. Scarpignato (Editor)
Although cytotoxic chemotherapy is very effective in the management of certain neoplasms such as testicular cancer, the efficacy of this therapeutic modality in the treatment of many common neoplasms is limited. Cure of macroscopic metastatic disease is extremely rare, and palliation of symptoms by chemotherapy can be problematic since the toxicity of the treatment often mitigates any improvement in the quality of life resulting from the temporary decrease in tumor burden. This situation has not only motivated attempts to develop novel cytotoxic agents, but has also stimulated research regarding innovative non-cytotoxic approaches. Amongst the various hormonal agents, increasing attention is being directed to somatostatin analogs, largely due to their antineoplastic activity in a variety...
