Conference on bi- and multilingualism - media invitation

Place: University of Helsinki, Finland

To what extent will the rapid spread of English as a lingua franca affect multilingual education and does the EU have a long term policy to promote multilingualism? What are the future scenarios for multilingual higher education? How can the University help students from both language groups to become bi-and multilingual?

These are a few of the interesting questions relating to multilingual higher education that will be discussed at the Conference entitled Bi-and multilingual universities - challenges and future prospects, September 1 - 3, 2005 at the University of Helsinki.

The main objective of the Conference is to highlight research and to exchange experiences on bi- and multilingual higher education, in particular on factors that promote and inhibit it. Furthermore, the aim is to discuss the strategic and pragmatic development of such multilingualism at the university level. The conference will thus be based around the following themes:
1. Multilingual higher education
2. The cultural, political and historical context of multilingualism
3. Multilingualism at the Universities in practice
