Neuroscience Research Programme to be a joint Finnish, Chinese and Canadian effort

The Academy of Finland has agreed to the joint organisation of the Neuroscience Research Programme (NEURO) in co-operation with a Chinese and Canadian research funding organisation. On 14 March, the Academy of Finland, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Institute of Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA/Canadian Institutes of Health Research) signed an agreement to share organisational supervision of the Neuroscience Research Programme (NEURO) during the period 2005-2009.

The Academy, INMHA and NSFC are jointly funding and administering the Neuroscience Research Programme, with the Academy of Finland overseeing its co-ordination. The Academy's share of funding for the Programme is EUR 7.1 million. The goal of the Programme is to support high-profile neuroscience research in member states and increase research co-operation between researchers in these countries. The Neuroscience Research Programme is the first joint research effort between Finland, China and Canada.

"The problems facing neuroscience are very topical right now. This is a complicated field of research, where international co-operation is crucial," explains NSFC director Han Jianguo. "We have also had good experiences working together with the Academy in previous years, such as our joint Centre of Excellence programme."

"The Programme also gave us the opportunity to find specific fields of research, in which co-operation between Finnish and Canadian researchers can be enhanced. Such a field might be something like neuroethics," says Assistant Director Astrid Eberhart of the Canadian contingent.

Research co-operation between Canada, China and Finland has increased in recent years, and the Programme will help to further reinforce these ties. Modern neuroscience research is, by nature, interdisciplinary, based with increasing frequency on international co-operation.
